JRA!!

I knew my rear wheel was bad, but I had no idea it was THIS bad and would go in such spectacular fashion. Yesterday afternoon I noticed a blip while breaking at a stop sign. I didn’t get much further down the road and the whole thing locked up. I got off the bike to check it out and found a 3” gap in the sidewall of my rim. I know I should have said uncle at this point, but being the extreme “run it into the ground” kind of guy I am, I unhooked the breaks with the hope of being able to ride at least a little bit further. Immediately as I got back on the saddle, a blast shot gunned from the affected area. I was sitting under a freeway overpass - this definitely enhanced the aural experience. 110psi + a gap in the sidewall + my body weight blew the thing to bits. The gap went from 3” to 15”. I couldn’t help but chuckle. It was ridiculous! I’ve blown tubes in bike shops and broken seatposts, cranks, axles, etc. All pale in comparison to this experience. Here’s the photo document:

WHAT THE???

Came across this yesterday on Craig's List. Why don't they just say, "we're looking for someone to help knock off Hypnotic Designs. We'd love to hook up with someone who is an avid bicyclist, void of moral fiber, and has a clue about design and product development. Oh and bring your own equipment too." Man!

Hi there. Looking for someone to help out with design and making of some cool bike knickers - like Dickies slightly teched out, with some padding sewn in and hemmed, and perhaps in material like nylon. Would love to hook up with someone who is an avid bicyclist and can give input on what fabric / features would be best. Pay will be negotiated, opportunity for a lot of work. Oh, and fun.
Should have own machine.
thanks.
look forward to hearin' from ye.

Sinister Vest

They're all gone - every last one. I will be removing the vest page in the next couple days. Will I have more jackets and vests for the fall? No. Just black knickers for now. Keeping it real. Keeping it simple. Keeping it real simple.

Product Update

The next batch of knickers should be done around August 1st and shipping out shortly thereafter. For dealers and individuals with backorders, you have the priority. Thanks for your patience! The next group will go out to QBP. The rest will head to the shelf.

I re-graded the pattern. Apparently, last fall’s switch to the new fabric effectively bumped down the sizing a notch – so for people normally wearing LG, you found yourselves wearing XL – as was the case with me. At first I thought it was just me and a reflection of my indulgent winter ways, but as time went on I ended up doing several exchanges (size up), QBP ran out of larger sizes, and next thing you know I’m belting out the inventory blues. I was out of stuff by year’s end – a major sin. But because of the time of year and the fact that knickers are a seasonal (fall/winter) item, I decided to postpone production – moving things to summer in preparation for the fall. Incidentally, this affected the men’s knickers ONLY – the sizing on the women’s knickers has been pretty spot on from the get go.

I should have new t-shirts again soon. Seriously! I actually bought blanks some time ago, but then got it in my head to add sweatshirts for the fall. I’ll order those shortly and get the whole lot over to the printer. Look for new stock around mid-August as well. Thanks.

Ready or Not Here We Come . . .

This fall (September) Hypnotic Designs will move to Portland, Oregon! Dana will be pursuing a graduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning at Portland State University. That much we know for sure - additional details are still fuzzy at best. We’ve got a lot to figure out in a relatively short period of time. When we were just up we did our best to scour neighborhoods for suitable housing, check daycare options, etc. Fingers are crossed things come together smoothly. We’re sad to leave Arcata - we’ve got pretty deep roots here. But you know what they say, “nothing ventured, nothing gained.” That certainly rang true when we decided to leave Minneapolis 10 years ago. I never look back. I have no regrets. And like Minneapolis, Portland is a cool town with a rich cycling community. 30,000 people riding (bikes) over the bridges every day! I’m thrilled to become one of them!

Summer Vacation

I’m here. Back in the saddle. Took basically all of June off from blogging. We were on vacation for one thing, but in addition I seem to have a lot rolling through my head these days – trouble narrowing my thoughts into concise blogging morsels.

We just got back from a 3 week trip to Portland, OR and Nederland, CO. About a week in Portland, split up by 10 days in Ned - just up the canyon from Boulder. A challenging trip, but enjoyable nonetheless. As for the challenging parts, we started out trading the flu – Dana got it first, then Oskar, then myself. We were up in Portland for that. Kind of put the kibosh on making the most of our time there. In CO we were hiking one afternoon when Dana fell hard on her right side. Ribs and elbow took the brunt. X-rays back in Portland revealed a broken wing. Not a terrible break, but still frustrating and painful. A cast might be in her future. Then there was the death of Linnea Luscher - friend to many in the Ned/Boulder area and beyond, including Timmy P and his family, whom we were visiting. Linnea was cycling with her mother along CO 119 (popular flat road stretch) between Boulder and Longmont, when struck by a gravel truck in a freak accident. Her mother, riding just a few feet behind her, was somehow uninjured. The weird thing is we rolled past the scene in the morning on the way to Fort Collins . . . cringing as we saw the bikes in the road, not knowing until later that it involved Linnea. She leaves behind her husband Marcus and 2 young kids. Pretty sad.

As for the enjoyable parts, we went on some great hikes, a few great rides (did an 8 hour singlespeed epic around the solstice . . . about 5 hours longer than any ride I’ve done year to date), ate good food, had good drink, even relaxed some. Big thanks to Timmy P and family for making our vacation their vacation. Let’s not forget the use of the Rednecks bio-diesel big rig – thanks again. Also big thanks to Chez Hansen for the hospitality, sitting on our car, and schlepping us to the airport. Oh and we got a private tour of New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins, CO from master brewer Bill Hepp. Thanks man! A very cool place! Much respect for their environmental position and malted efforts! Dana especially appreciated the t-shirt (she had a La Folie sour brown “shower” incident that left her smelling akin to fermented sour patch kids) for the car ride home.

Got some more news to report and product updates, but that’s for another day. Got to spread it out. I’m committed to regular posts here in July. Stay tuned . . .
